After successfully completing this course, the Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Ohio will be able to:

Discuss the responsibility of the licensed practical nurse in the performance of limited intravenous therapy procedures;

Identify the IV solutions and medications the LPN may administer;

Summarize the prohibitions involved in IV therapy for LPNs;

Apply principles and practices of (standard) universal precautions as related to intravenous therapy;

Describe and safely perform the procedures for venipuncture, collection of equipment, site selection, palpation of veins, and skin preparation for IV therapy procedures that may be performed by LPNs;

Explain the procedures for reconstituting and administering intravenous antibiotics via piggyback including basic pharmacology, compatibilities, and flow rates;

Demonstrate the procedures for adding intravenous solutions to existing infusions, hanging intravenous solutions, changing intravenous tubing, performing intravenous dressing changes and flushing and converting/discontinuing peripheral intermittent infusion devices;

Correctly calculate drip rates for both gravity and electronic delivery systems;

Recognize signs and symptoms of local and systemic complications in the administration of fluids and guidelines for management of these complications as well as preventive measures;

Accurately document IV therapy procedures, the administration of fluids and medications and any complications arising from these procedures according to agency policies; and

Provide support and psychological preparation and information for the patient who is to receive IV therapy as well as family members as appropriate.
